Will the Cloud Kill Consoles?
Not according to Gamestop.
Technology has come a long way, and gaming is always at the forefront, utilizing the newest tech to improve gamers’ experiences. One innovation adds a potential benefit to the gaming community: Cloud streaming. Cloud based storage allows streaming from any location with an internet connection, and allows for a portable experience without devices such as the lame PS Vita.
Gamestop isn’t intimidated by this concept, however, and plans on taking advantage of their PowerUp rewards program to save them from the killer cloud. GameStop CEO Paul Raines commented that they can track what is popular through this program and adjust to demand before the release of a game in order to boost revenue, and keep their heads above water if and when streaming takes off. He states, “We know exactly what games people have and which games they are going to be playing. We know exactly where they live. We know what the demand is, and we know who is going to be playing those games,” Um… that’s kind of creepy, actually… Gamestop knows where you live! It seems like a stretch to adapt according to the Cloud strategy instead of embracing it, but Gamestop will adapt even if it doesn’t work.
