Bethesda Purchasing Fallout MMO as Part of Settlement

Bethesda vs InterplayDetails are starting to trickle in for the Bethesda vs Interplay settlement. Among those details is the fate of the Fallout MMO.

As part of the the settlement agreement, Bethesda’s parent company, ZeniMax, will purchase full development and ownership rights of the MMO for $2 million dollars. After that, Interplay and Masthead studios will no longer develop the MMO and lose all future rights to Fallout Online.

In addition to the MMO, Interplay will also lose rights to Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics. Fortunately for Interplay, these original titles will be available as the Fallout Trilogy from Interplay until December of 2013. After that, the rights will move to Bethesda, as part of the purchase agreement.

Both companies will pay for their own legal fees.

With Bethesda, publisher of Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas, as sole owners of the Fallout franchise, what new or old Fallout project would you like to see?

  1. What would i like to see? The absorbing gameplay from New Vegas along with a great story from all the old Fallouts!

  2. Oh my god, I think, I just wet myself.

  3. Maybe as part of the settlement Interplay get to co-develop the next fallout game, that would be great in my opinion! Imagine it with the great story from the originals with the modern engine of Skyrim!

    • I agree completely. The old Fallout stories were sooo good, but the gameplay was hard to get behind. I’m not a huge fan of MMOs though. If The Old Republic can’t get me to play an MMO, I don’t think anything will. 😉

  4. To clarify, there is no guarantee that “Fallout Online” will ever be made. All we know is that Bethesda owns all rights.

Also, even if I sound like a Negative Nancy (sorry, Nancy), this lawsuit was so ugly, I doubt Interplay and Bethesda will ever work together. In other words, Bethesda will never ask Interplay to set up a development branch (as Interplay has closed and sold all of their old development studios, like BioWare) or publish a game (as Bethesda is a developer/publisher), and Interplay will never consider selling properties to Bethesda again.

Interplay still owns some of their older properties, but they are only republishing old games on new systems.

  5. Thanks Ben, I hope interplay keep their head above the water, They are a good company that deserves better than that.
