Media Molecule Focuses on Research and Development

LittleBigPlanet 2 CollectiblesAdmittedly, Media Molecule has been pretty reliant on LittleBigPlanet. The sequel promoted user-created content more than any other game from 2011, and the franchise has become a pop-culture sensation.

However, it is not the best business strategy to put all the proverbial eggs in one proverbial basket (I’m talking to you, Rovio).

In 2011, Media Molecule spent £4.1 million on research and development (after reporting £3.44 million in profits), looking into various new technologies for future projects.

It is vital for Media Molecule to focus a high proportion of its resources on R&D to allow it to maintain its world leading position as a developer of innovative games…

[Technologies such as] leading edge physics and dynamics, rapid world creation from laser data, innovative routes to market via web based interfaces, 3D stereo-optics for advanced simulation, and use of ‘hi-def’ data capture and processing techniques.

No announcement has been made for LittleBigPlanet 3, and some are thinking that this new focus on research and development will lead to a new IP.

As a gamer, do you want to see more LBP or something completely different? What would a new IP from Media Molecule look like?
