Warner Brothers to Focus on More DC-Universe Games

Batman Arkham City

Warner  Brothers recently opened up a new studio called Warner Bros. Montreal to work on more super hero games, stemming from the success of Batman.  Warner Bros. realizes the success in the still-young video game market and would like to begin focusing on other popular DC characters.  So what is it that makes games like Batman Arkham City such a success?  Reid Schneider, vice president of Warner Bros. Montreal recently gave his insights to Industry Gamers.

Comparing Spider-Man, and Batman games, Schneider points out that both games focus on the characters, much like hmm, I don’t know, the actual comic books?  He states, “If you look over the past decade of superhero games, there were two. The first one was when Neversoft made Spider-Man—I think it was back on the PS1. People were like, ‘Wow, this is really good,’ and then a couple of things came out that were okay.  Then Rocksteady came out withArkham Asylum and that again changed the expectations. If you look at the similarities between the two, they weren’t based on movies per se. They were just taking that really rich fiction from the comic books and exploring the characters.”

green lanternThe draw of comic books isn’t the pretty pictures… okay some of it is, but what keeps people coming back is the character development and the “rich fiction”.  Rocksteady really let loose their creative juices with Arkham City and Arkham Asylum and create a fun and engaging game, that allows gamers to delve into the persona of Bruce Wayne and discover who he is and what he does in sticky situations.

I would personally love to play as Hal Jordan in a Green Lantern game on par with the successful Batman games.  The Flash, Aquaman, and Wonderwoman could have some fantastic games with original gameplay, if the energy and care that went into Batman were taken for those titles as well.

  1. At the risk of sounding like I know more about comics than I do, I would like to see the Checkmate organization portrayed in a video game. They are a bunch of spandex-wearing international spies. ‘Nuff said!

On the other hand, I know that Warner Bros. Montreal has failed when Superman appears as a playable character. He’s bad enough as an NPC in DC Universe Online. I hate him so much…

  2. I Would have really liked an Iron Man game where the controls didn’t blow. I mean, I have a british AI in my helmet and a suit that might as well have the Halo array in it, it is so pwn. I would enjoy having an actual hand in my own death when I eventually go emo in the game rather that plummeting nosehair first into a tank shell because my thrusters wouldn’t turn the hell off. A super hero game that didn’t make me want to trebuchet a sac of bowing balls into an orphanage would be welcome.

  3. Me, I would love to see a Deadpool game. He is the perect Anti-Hero and people love that. Well…I know I do…

  4. Oh gosh…I spelled “perfect” wrong.

  5. Yeah, cuz Iron Man is DC… Hunter…
