Warner Brothers to Focus on More DC-Universe Games
Warner Brothers recently opened up a new studio called Warner Bros. Montreal to work on more super hero games, stemming from the success of Batman. Warner Bros. realizes the success in the still-young video game market and would like to begin focusing on other popular DC characters. So what is it that makes games like Batman Arkham City such a success? Reid Schneider, vice president of Warner Bros. Montreal recently gave his insights to Industry Gamers.
Comparing Spider-Man, and Batman games, Schneider points out that both games focus on the characters, much like hmm, I don’t know, the actual comic books? He states, “If you look over the past decade of superhero games, there were two. The first one was when Neversoft made Spider-Man—I think it was back on the PS1. People were like, ‘Wow, this is really good,’ and then a couple of things came out that were okay. Then Rocksteady came out withArkham Asylum and that again changed the expectations. If you look at the similarities between the two, they weren’t based on movies per se. They were just taking that really rich fiction from the comic books and exploring the characters.”
The draw of comic books isn’t the pretty pictures… okay some of it is, but what keeps people coming back is the character development and the “rich fiction”. Rocksteady really let loose their creative juices with Arkham City and Arkham Asylum and create a fun and engaging game, that allows gamers to delve into the persona of Bruce Wayne and discover who he is and what he does in sticky situations.
I would personally love to play as Hal Jordan in a Green Lantern game on par with the successful Batman games. The Flash, Aquaman, and Wonderwoman could have some fantastic games with original gameplay, if the energy and care that went into Batman were taken for those titles as well.
