Sony Deludes Themselves with the Vita… Again.
Sony Worldwide Studios European vice president Michael Denny recently commented on the upcoming portable, the PS Vita. His comments reveal high hopes for the portable, a midst gamer complaints about constraints on memory for certain games, and the additional cost it entails. He states, “Our mission, our vision, is that we now have a portable gaming system that is going to be massively appealing to gamers – initially core gamers, but then a wider sense of gamers going forward,”. Phone devices already dominate the market, and that is the “wider sense of gamers” he refers to, and appealing to core gamers is already looking grim.
He goes on to say, “We have to acknowledge that we’re coming into a very competitive landscape in the portable, mobile gaming market. But I think the main thing for us is that we are a true next-gen platform. We are going to truly differentiate ourselves from the competition, so people who do care about the gaming – who want a deeper, richer, more immersive experience with their gaming – are going to absolutely love this device.” Steering away from what is successful in the market right now, doesn’t seem to be a slick move. The hardware will be impressive, and the app store adds value, but appealing to a wider range of gamers is a long shot.
